Sample pitch letter – specific:

[Greeting]

Dear [Editor]:

[Idea]

In 2004, the Boston Red Sox became the only team in baseball history to lose the first three games of a seven-game series and go on to win the series. While they had a talented roster that included many future Hall of Famers and other “name” players, the Sox would not have made it to their first World Series championship in nearly 90 years without the help of lesser-known teammates and “role” players. I would like to interview these players and allow them to discuss their roles in their own words.

[Description of credentials – specific/trade publication]

In the past 10 years, I have written scores of pieces on sports – specifically baseball. As a native Bostonian, I have developed a special fondness (if not madness) for the Red Sox and have followed them closely through bad times and good. As such, I can surely bring a knowledgeable and experienced voice to your publication while enlightening and entertaining your readers.
