A worthy guide to the ever-unfolding story of music

MUSIC: A fold-out graphic history

Nicholas O’Neil and Susan Hayes (Illustrated by Rudy Taylor)

What on Earth Books

Though no single source could ever fully explain and capture the wonderful world of music and while this latest effort is sure to spark debates regarding who should be included (and whether or not the Beatles deserve their own panel, as inspirational as they may be), this latest effort is impressively balanced in terms of its geographical, cultural, and musical tastes and offers at least an effective introduction to and explanation of this entity that affects and impacts so many.

Starting with a map of the world’s earliest influences, this expansive volume is not exactly one to curl up with but deserves to be spread out on the floor and explored. In addition to introducing the pivotal people in the history of sound, the book also discusses important instruments, timely tunings, acoustical advances, and other elements that have also shaped the world of music. It even explains what a classical conductor is doing up there and includes a sparse but overarching glossary and Classical-heavy playlist that at least can get readers started on their aural adventures.

Bravo!
