Tips for the interview

An interview is not only a chance for you to learn things. It is also a chance to find out things that your readers may want to know.

In order to do so, the following tips may help:

  1. Know what you already know about the topic and what you want to know
  2. Think about what other people may want to know
  3. Consider who can help you find out such things
  4. Contact such people and ask them if they would care to share their knowledge/insights
  5. PREPARE QUESTIONS (one of the WORST questions a writer can do is ask “So, what else can you tell me?”)

(Note: While the questions should generally lead into each other, be prepared to change/insert/delete questions as you go along)

  1. Bring a tape recorder, pad, and pen (NEVER rely on just one tool) or conduct the interview over the phone, recording the call (WITH permission) or taking dictation and typing as you speak with the person being interviewed
  2. KEEP your notes (you may need to refer to, build upon them later, especially if an editor needs to check a fact, change a quote, etc.)
  3. ALWAYS ask if it will be acceptable to contact the person again for follow-up (you may think of new questions or need to re-check a fact or clarify a point)
  4. Check ALL facts (this includes names, dates, etc.)
  5. Compose the piece AS SOON AS POSSIBLE

(Note: This applies to reviews as well, as much can be lost or forgotten over time)

REMEMBER: The process should be FUN so RELAX and ENJOY!
