Forming the story

Preview

  • pick an event (e.g., concert, play, sporting event, etc.)
  • find someone who is involved with the event (e.g., actor, athlete, etc.)
  • arrange an interview with that person
  • use materials to compose a feature that mentions the event and uses the questions and answers to inform readers about it

Review

  • pick an event (e.g., concert, play, sporting event, etc.)
  • compose a piece about what occurred there (perhaps referencing other events that are similar, the comparison with which will enhance reader’s understanding/enjoyment of the event)

Feature

  • find a person/item/place that presents an interesting story
  • interview/discuss the person/item/event, making sure to point out what makes it “special“ (which will also justify your pitch)

“Thought” piece

  • pick a topic with many aspects/possible sides
  • establish a premise about the topic
  • arrange interviews from people who are familiar with the various aspects or who espouse the various sides
  • compose a piece that explores the topic through the various perspectives
