PROPER POSITIONING FOR INFANTS:

Infants (i.e., 0-17 months) should ALWAYS sleep ON THEIR BACKS

Failure to do so has been shown to increase the likelihood of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS)

HOWEVER, they should be encouraged to spend SOME waking time ON THEIR STOMACHS.

This “tummy time” allows them to develop their head, neck, and shoulder muscles and promotes bran development as they come to respond to sights and sounds by turning their heads

While on their tummies, infants should be placed on soft but firm surfaces and surrounded with toys and other mirrors

A caregiver should ALWAYS be within arms reach of each child

Infants’ positions should be alternated every so often until they are able to move by themselves
