For anyone who has had the privilege of catching Las Vegas’ longest-running live act – the astoundingly dynamic (and occasionally dangerous) duo of Penn and Teller – it may com eas no surprise that these magicians/actors/tv producers can be great at almost anything they lay their sliehgt-of-hands on. Even so, many who come to the Rio Casino are often taken aback to find that more than one of them can talk and also that they have many talents hat often take them outside their thratrical home. In fact, many have to peer under the pork pie hat of the tall bass player in the lobby to realize that it is in fact Jillette himself laying down rhythms for his musical partner Mike Jones, who is widely acclaimed as one of the best at what he does as well!
On this live recording, the musical magic bewtween Jullette and Jones can be fully experienced, as the pair take early arrivers on a world-wide whirlwind tour of Jazz that ranges from Billy Bird’s “Broadway,” Rodgers and Hart’s “Have You Met Miss Jones” and the Gershwin’s “But Not for Me” to Antono Carlos Jobim’s “Corcovado” and a tangy twist of Johnny Mercer’s “Tangerine.” Dorothy Fields and Jimmy McHugh get a private box with “On the Sunny Side of the Street” and a bubbly bounce through “Exactly Like You” and Jones shows how his compositions can stand up to these titans with “Box Viewing Blues” (which, as is music-chile Jillette’s way, is filled with snippets of other favorites from the worlds of Jazz and Rock). Throughout, the pair of performers play off each other in ways that invite both toe tapping and deeper consideration, perhaps even to the point that those who do not have tickets to the magic might want to drop by for a pre-show concert! Even for those who cannot zip to Sin City on a whim, however, this album is a great intro and a great album in its own Rio-ght!
