Expectations:
- Respect – Respect is of utmost value in this course and is expected in all that we do and say. While we fully encourage open and honest conversation and also risk-taking, any comments that may be construed as disrespectful, insulting, or harassing to another member of this class will NOT be tolerated
- Honesty – As this course is intended to encourage everyone to express their own ideas, it will be expected that, unless otherwise noted, ALL ideas you present are, in fact, your own. YOUR IDEAS MATTER, but they MUST be YOURS. Therefore, even when you are not quoting directly, be sure to cite sources for ideas that do not entirely belong to you. Failing to properly cite the ideas or words of another will result in a failing grade on the assignment and/or the entire course. Please see the student handbook or http://www.bentley.edu/alliance/academic-integrity for more information on Bentley’s academic integrity policy and honor code.
- Analog Culture – As I am both a Luddite (I do not use much technology) and admittedly jealous (I cannot do half of what you do with devices), I ask that ALL cellular phones and other devices should be OFF for the ENTIRE class. If you find yourself involved in any potential “emergencies,” Please notify the instructor ahead of time (or at least at the beginning of class) so we can make special arrangements. Abuse of this privilege will not be tolerated. Furthermore, failure to comply with this request will result in a lowering of your final grade and perhaps other sanctions.
- Preparedness – ALL work must be prepared by the BEGINNING of class. Homework for this or other classes should NOT be completed during class. Such behaviors are distracting and therefore disrespectful (see above). If you insist on engaging in such behaviors (or any distracting behaviors), you may be asked to leave the class and your attendance and grading records may suffer as a result (see below regarding attendance).
- Support: You are fortunate to be at a university that supports students in multiple ways. In addition to tutors and a writing center, it offers caring professionals who want to support you both in and outside of class. If you EVER need assistance with ANY work for this (or any other) class, PLEASE contact me. My only request is that you put the word “Bentley” in your email subject so I can tell it is from you.
REMEMBER: Writing is challenging; but it is also rewarding!
